As I packed my bag, I was happy thinking about the fact of going to the places I always loved visiting. It will be my third visit to those places in Meghalaya but I am not bored of going there again. However, I always crave going to Meghalaya again and again to enjoy the mesmerizing and pleasant views.
SHILLONG is known as “THE SCOTLAND of the EAST” is the capital of Meghalaya. There are a lot of places to explore here which you will love too. Exploring new places and learning new things is the most amazing part of life. After visiting the places in Shillong you can opt for other beautiful places from Meghalaya like Cherrapunji, Jaintia Hills, etc.
On the other hand, there are also lots of beautiful and adventurous places to explore. The best time to visit Shillong is the months of March-June and October-February. You can also visit during June-September. But this is the monsoon time and during this time you can see heavy rainfalls in Shillong. July is the wettest month in Shillong.
You can enjoy the waterfalls as it is the best time to visit those and as many tourists do prefer to travel during monsoons, you can also find reasonable hotels to live in.
But if you are planning of exploring the other places of Meghalaya then its better to come in the months of October-May. As Cherrapunji, one of the most visited place in Meghalaya and many other tourist places receives heavy rainfall throughout the year so the months of October-May is good to pay a visit as the weather remains cool and pleasant.
Shillong is pass through two major highways:
- National Highway 40 (INDIA) which is connected to Guwahati
- National Highway 44 (INDIA) which is connected to Tripura and Mizoram(NH 44A)
If you are going via Guwahati then You can take a bus from Guwahati to Shillong. There are several private as well as government-operated deluxe and regular tourist buses going at regular intervals.
You can rent a bike from Guwahati if you love to ride in the hills. But it’s better to hire a taxi or for a convenient and comfortable journey. You can even take a shared taxi to be more economical. In short, the drive is extremely beautiful so you will really enjoy it.
So, now let’s talk about the places that I visited in Meghalaya and found it quite mesmerizing.
Also known as Barapani Lake. It’s one of the most beautiful lakes here. It is situated at a distance of 15 kilometers north of Shillong, i.e. in the north-eastern Indian state of Meghalaya. It is a hotspot for picnics. If you go here any day, don’t forget to watch the sunrise.
It’s like a topping of cherry on the cake. The sunrise was the best thing for me in the lake. The lake is surrounded by abundantly green East Khasi hills which makes the place look more beautiful. Sitting near a lake and enjoying the sunrise with a cup of tea is what I wanted always and am glad I could do that.
2. Shillong View Point, Laitkor Peak.
The best place to enjoy the Shillong city in a bird’s eye view. You can view the entire Shillong city from here as it is the highest point in the entire state of Meghalaya. The Shillong Peak is at 6,449 feet above the sea level.
You can enjoy the local food here. It’s a very wonderful, nice and clean place. The place will mesmerize you. The breeze over there brings some peace in your mind and will take you to another world. The place is inside an air-force station so you will need an ID proof to go.
Spending time beside a waterfall in the midst of nature capturing some memorable moments is a superb idea. The Elephant Falls is named after an Elephant like a stone at its foot. Elephant Falls is among the most popular falls in North-East. It is a “THREE STEP WATERFALL”.
There are around 100 steps here which was very tiresome for me to climb. But yes, once you cross these hurdles you will see the most beautiful scenic beauty. A photograph with a waterfall in the background is what we want and is must and this is the place you can do so.
4.Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians.
It is the biggest and the most beautiful Catholic Church in Shillong as it covers the districts of East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi. It is a very old and famous church built over 50 years ago.
Once you go inside the church you will never feel like coming out. I spent the maximum time in this place as I found peace here. An inner peace prevailed in me as I was sitting inside. After coming out I felt much relaxed.
Mawlynnong a small village that won the status of being the cleanest village (2003), not just in India, but in Asia because of its cleanness. This village is known for its cleanliness. The village is located 90 km from Shillong. Peace prevails around in this village.
Travelling from a chaotic city to such a peaceful village just made my day. The people residing here are all Khasi peoples. They were very friendly and greeted me with much pleasure. It was a good experience for me to come and know about their lifestyle. I enjoyed being here.
6.Living Root Bridges.
Living Root Bridges occur in West Jaintia Hills district and East Khasi Hills district. The Khasi and Jaintia peoples made the bridge on their own from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees.
It’s a form of the shaping of a tree. I felt a bit scared while stepping in the bridge as I thought I would fall down. But once u get into it, your fear will go off. I was amazed to see the scenic beauty over there.
At a distance of 8 km from Smit and 24 km from Shillong, Laitlum Canyon is a picturesque mountain ridge situated near Smit in Meghalaya. This canyon is also referred to as “Sit Valley” by the locals. The view of the canyons is very beautiful.
The shrouded fogs add beauty to the canyons. The most beautiful thing I found there was the Laitlum stream that lies under an ancient wooden bridge. You can click dozens of photographs there. It’s the perfect place to enjoy nature. You will enjoy being there amidst the nature for sure as I did.
This cave is an underground adventure which is just awesome. The opening of the cave is very spacious but once you get inside you will find the cave smashed into a small neck. It’s a one-way road. You will have to enter from one side and come out from the other end.
The cave is just 150m. It’s beautiful, adventurous as well as suffocating if stuck there. You will have to show your athleticism in some parts as some openings were very small. I was scared of getting stuck there. A second thought came in my mind of going back but at the very next I thought ‘Let’s Adventure” and so I move forward. Above all the experience was next level.
9.Seven Sisters Falls.
Also known as Nohsngithiang Falls. Its located in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The best time to visit this waterfall is in the rainy season. You can get a clear view of all the seven falls during this time.I was lucky I could see all the seven. The falls starts its journey at the Eco Park. It’s one of the most beautiful waterfall. I was mesmerized by the view.
10.Krang shuri Waterfall .
It’s the most beautiful tourist attraction in Meghalaya. The water is crystal clear and as blue as the sky. You can get life jackets there for swimming and It’s the best place for photography. Very few tourists venture there and so it’s a hassle-free place.
You can enjoy the most there. I did enjoyed. As I didn’t know swimming I wore the life jacket and got down because I didn’t want to miss and regret not clicking photos there. Who dares to miss and captures such a beautiful place and view? So do visit this place before you regret not having a fully enjoyable trip.
